One Catfish you Don't Want to Catch

The Candirú or Canero (Vandellia cirrhosa) is a freshwater fish belonging to the Catfish group. The species grows only to being one to two inches in length and four to six millimeters wide. It is shaped like an eel and is almost completely transparent, making it almost impossible to see in the water. A fast, powerful swimmer, the fish is smooth and slimy, with sharp teeth and backward-pointing spines on its gill. The Candiru is primarily found in the Amazon and Oranoco rivers and has a reputation among the natives as the most feared fish in its waters.

Regulations for Dam Good Fishing

We are mindful of this fact, and will ensure that the fish stocks at the various dams be not overfished or depleted. Towards this aim, we propose the following:

That fishing be carried out on a ‘catch and release’ system. This is what most sport Angler’s are encouraged to do.

In the event however that there appears to be an overstock or proliferation of fish and it is decided to control the overstock of fish, we may consider having a ‘bag-limit’of fish that can be taken by each angler. For example, if a certain dam has too much fish, the bag limit may be four(4) fishes per angler. For dams not seriously overstocked, perhaps a bag limit of two (2) fishes, and so on. The bag limits can be varied depending on the situations prevailing at any particular dam.

From our previous observations, it would seem that certain dams do indeed have an over proliferation of fish. For example, the Air Itam Dam and this in itself may also adversely affect water quality at the dam.

Apart from this, there also appears to be the presence of certain fishes, which if not controlled, could also upset the ecological system at the dams. Here we refer to the presence at certain fishes, such as, ikan toman, a predatory fish that will hunt and devour any and all species present, also to the suspected presence of ikan piranha, most probably released into the waters by persons having no further interest in keeping them etc. We have also had reports of Peacock Bass present in the Telok Bahang Dam. This is also a predator fish, alien to our ecological system.

Towards some form of control of fish species and stocks, we would humbly suggest and undertake to provide you a list of all fishes caught at the various dams.

In the consideration of bag limits, a condition may also be imposed towards the species and size of the fish, say below a certain weight (e.g. 500gm) or a certain size (e.g. 8 inches) be released.

With these proposals in place, we are confident that fish stocks can be maintained at a healthy level at the dams.

B) Outsiders at the dam fishing. Problems of safety and pollution

This is an urgent consideration and to alleviate such problems, we propose the following.

That all angling activities be limited to persons who are members of the PMPP (Persatuan Memancing Pulau Pinang).

That any person who would wish to fish at the dams be subjected to all rules and regulations as PBA/PMPP would impose.

That all such members of PMPP who are allowed to fish at the dams, sign an Indemnity Form thereby discharging the PBA/PMPP from any responsibilities towards any mishap that may occur. We enclose herewith a draft copy of the Indemnity Form, for your kind perusal and comments (Appendix “A”)

Apart from this, Indemnity Form, all members will also have to comply with PMPP rules and regulations regarding all angling activities, example hook size, baits, line capacity, catch and release (if any), bag limit (if any), appreciation of ecosystem, absence of pollution, littering etc.

We are also reserving a right upon the PMPP to expel any member found flouting the rules.

We will be enclosing herewith our draft copy of the rules and regulations which will be imposed upon our members (Appendix “B”).

As regards the mechanisms of control of anglers, we propose the following:-

That all intending anglers report to our PMPP secretary and other authorized PMPP Committee members, (Marshalls) who will then prepare a list of members who will be allowed to fish on that particular day at that particular venue (dams).
This list will then be presented to your officer on duty at the dam(name supplied by PBA)who will then only allow entry as per the list.

That all anglers possess our PMPP member’s card, which is to be shown on request.

That all anglers (PMPP) be issued with a tag, hung around the neck, for easy identification and to differentiate them from any other outsiders (public).

We undertake to liase with your officer(s) at the venue so that the above is complied with. This should satisfy your requirements as set out in paragraph (b) of your letter dated 5^th November 2007.

C) Pollution/Littering

Towards this end, and apart from the rules and regulations imposed on anglers, we propose that at the end of the day’s fishing, a joint inspection of the fishing area be done by your officer in charge and our PMPP secretary or Marshalls to ensure that the area is free from such pollution/littering. A letter of such is hereby enclosed for your officer and PMPP Marshalls, (as joint inspection officers) to ensure that this is complied with.

D) Boats etc.

This is a viable and excellent consideration. Although many PMPP members have small boats, your proposed provision of boats is acceptable. Of course, all boat Anglers will have to have a safety life-jacket which is compulsory.

As for boat charges, we will abide by your views thereof.

We may perhaps also state here that in the event your boats are unavailable, perhaps you may consider that our PMPP members home boats that are pollution free, in that they are powered by electric battery motors, (Minn Kota) that are not dependant or use fuel such as petrol etc. This may be a KIV (keep in view) suggestion.

The use of boats is also a good idea in that some species of fish are usually found in open waters far away from the banks, and are not fishable from the banks due to the limited castings range of rod and line. Mid water fish include, the Toman, usually only caught by trolling, i.e. moving bait.

E) Dates – Fishing Dam

This refers to paragraph (a) of your letter. Dates can be arranged as when to your schedule, of which we will undertake to abide.

As a suggestion we humbly opine, that one (1) day a month be allocated to one Dam a month. Example:

December 2007 – Ayer Itam Dam

January 2008 – Teluk Bahang Dam
February 2008 – Mengkuang Dam
March 2008 – Ayer Itam
April 2008 – Teluk Bahang Dam
May 2008 – Mengkuang Dam

…… and so on and so forth.

This will ensure that any one Dam is only open to Angling once every three months although Angling may be done every month per dam on a rotation basis.

Dates in the month can perhaps be fixed on a Sunday.
It is envisaged that a fee be charged upon every participant that intends to fish at the Dam. We propose that a fee of RM30 be charged upon every entrant. That out of this sum of RM30 per entrant.

PBA Approves Fishing in DAMS for PMPP

Fantastic news! Through the enthusiastic efforts of the PMPP committee, the PBA (Pihak Berkuasa Air) has given permission for PMPP members to fish at 3 of the Penang Dams. With precious few places in Penang left to fish, the large dams provide excellent sport fishing challenges.
The Mengkuang, Teluk Bahang and Air Itam Dams will be open to PMPP members at special times. Namely once a month on Sunday on a rotational basis. Charges oer person will be RM30. All anglers must strictly adhere to the rules and regulations.

Baking Soda

Chopping garlic or cleaning a fish can leave their "essence" on your fingers long after the chore is done. Get those nasty food smells off your hands by simply wetting them and vigorously rubbing with about 2 teaspoons baking soda instead of soap. The smell should wash off with the soda.

Red Hot Top Japanese Lures Selection in Malaysia

Red Hot Angler is synonymous with lure fishing in the Klang Valley Area. Suzuki-san is already a household name among the lurers who patronises his place from Malaysia and Singapore. A very humble and generous angler, he has earned admiration from many customers. Thus, he has graciously shared with MFN his choice selection for lures to be used in Malaysia. (1) VIPER 110 (Brazil lure)

Might be a copy product of LC Sammy, but a giant version which is popular in Brazil. The body structure and accessories are built for handling huge peacock bass, so it's no doubt a very strong one. So as the calling power of this pencil bait, the big body can produce big movement and metal bearings creating loud and noisy calling sound.

Different from LC Sammy, this big doggie don't dive easily while being retrieved. Good for peacock bass and toman back in Malaysia, especially in windy and muddy ndition.

(2) Type1 RPP-60F, Type2 RPP-60F (Anglers Republic)

Either you prefer long slide skating action (Type1) or short step dog walking action (Type2), RPP has them both, so the angler can adapt to more situations, cover more fields and catch more fish.

These 6cm smaller size pencil are effective for clear water and high pressure fishing ground, such as the very popular Subang Lake. Smaller size, lively colour and appealing action will trigger the fish to bite reflectively.

While doing fast and short twitch, these pencils can produces high speed dog walking and quick sliding action. Advisable to use spinning tackle on these small pencils.

(3) RPP-60S Submarine (Anglers Republic)

Another member in the RPP family, and this is a rarely found 6cm sinking type. In a windy day where the surface is wavy, underwater action will be a better choice compare to the top water. Fish also will be less active to reach the upper layer when the air pressure is high; these are the time to reach for the Submarine.

Effective not only for freshwater species like peacock bass and sebarau, even successful for saltwater field when targeting tarpon or small trevally.

(4) TTPE 80 & 100 (Anglers Republic)

Available in two sizes, 8 cm and 10cm. The designer had a very clear and simple concept in mind while creating these lures, which is ?simple control, easy catch?.

Closely observe, you will find that the eyes that connecting split rings to hooks are set facing front, which have the effect of improving hook up rate. The lager volume of these pencils provides higher floating power which allows anglers to use thicker line without effecting the lure action.

With a quick stepping action, the 80mm TTPE is very good for peacock bass and sebarau, switch to the bigger TTPE 100 while grandpa grade Peacock bass and toman are around.

(5) DOG-X COAYU (Megabass)

No. 1 popular small pencil bait in Japan. Specially design to create bait fish escaping action, body will roll side to side while sliding, even some soft splashing when jerk harder.

Different from the original Dog-X, this smaller version has a round body with flat surface at both sides. The purpose of this unique design is to create flashing and indurations which are as strong as a bigger size pencilbait. Small body but with big appeal is an effective solution to attract spooky fish under tough condition. Flat side bodies also provide a higher gripping strength in the water so that the lure won?t jump out even when retrieve fast.

Logical concept and perfect craftsmanship are the two rules that you can always found in every Megabass lures.

(6) DOG-X & GIANT DOG (Megabass)

Both models are graded as collector items by lure collection maniac around the world. The beautiful snake-like sliding action of this lure was first shown to Malaysian anglers when it appeared in "Kingfisher" peacock bass VCD. It was a shocking surprise for both lure and non-lure anglers.

Megabass created two type of Dog-X, walking type and sliding type. Both of them are exactly same in term of length, body volume and design, but the different internal structure makes them swim in different style. When the fish stop biting on one of the lure, switch to the other one. A same lure with a totally different action will trigger the fish to start biting again; this is a very useful secret technique when you have both of them.

Anglers were catching peacock bass, sebarau and even in few cases, arowana in Malaysia water using these doggies.

Giant Dog-X, the big brother for Dog-X was born to target larger predator. The legendary Zara Gossa was the first pencilbait created in the history; while some people even believe that the Giant Dog-X is the perfect pencilbait which is the result of the pencilbait evolution.

This big pencilbait still maintain the smooth action of the smaller version, silky slide, side splashing, natural reflection and calling sound, killer for toman and XL size peacock bass, and already proven in hooking up toman in Kenyir Lake.

(7) BIG LUSH (Saurus)

Big Lush is a no more in production model, produce by a Japanese lure maker, Saurus, which is one of the well known lure company designing some of the very famous top water lures since 30 years ago.

Big Lush is a level floating pencilbait which designed to slide far and smooth, 10~20cm further if compare to usual dog walking pencilbait, this character made Big Lush a better choice when anglers decide to cover a wide area faster.

Long sliding action had very strong calling power during calm day. This character also allow this pencilbait to perform "half twitch" and "twitch & dive" actions, which are another two type of pencilbait very effective alternative actions, beside the well known "walk the dog" action. Some how, level floating pencilbait is not common in the market, so this one should be a good choice for those who want to try a level pencil.

(8) THUNDER DOG (Storm)

The shape and design of the Thunder Dog is very similar to the (1) Brazilian pencil, designer might get the original idea from LC Sammy. While Sammy is a polycarbonate version of another famous handmade wooden pencilbait in Japan name Sam?s pencil.

Thunder dog available in two sizes (9cm and 11cm), floats 45ø on the surface and need a litter bit more skill to handle. For those who manage to walk this pencil, it actually performs a very attractive action with high calling ability. Also come with a strong and tough body structure and very affordable price, few anglers claim that this lure were very successful in Temenggor Dam.

(9) ZOMBI BUG PEN (Duel)

The only pencilbait made of rubber foam you can find in the market, not only won't crack like other hard body lures, and most of all, perform a very soft entry while contact with the water surface, which is totally a different effect for fish. Don't be too surprise if fish rush out to attack the moment this Bug Pen touches water.

Soft material also provides absorbance while anglers hook up with a jumper or head shaker, like siakap or tarpon. Another litter secret for a rubber foam lure is that it's easy to add extra weight into the lure body to re-adjust the floating angle. Add a pair of feather on both the body side to create a stopping resistance for the lure to move slower with tighter action.

Another Amazon pencilbait for monster peacock bass. The special feature of this big size pencilbait is the high tone sound produced when the metal balls hit at the lure body, which is turn to be a very effective calling power especially for large predator.

Try work it out with short but strong jerk, the combination of sharp action and high tone sound will be very appealing for toman. While doing a standard dog walk action will wake up big peacock bass hidden deep. Good for stain and muddy water.

WANDER (Lucky Craft)

A lot of anglers misunderstood this lure to be sinking pencil bait, which is actually a jig minnow. The purpose of this lure is to present a "lift and fall" action rather then walk the dog underwater.

It is no doubt a good lure while making sharp lift and allows it to sink, follow by lowering the rod slowly; most of the bite comes on the falls. Proven successful for pacu in pay pond. Cast it out and retrieve fast with a few short jerks when sebarau is chasing small bait fish on the surface.

A very unique three pieces jointed pencilbait, the dog walking action has an additional "snaky" motion, because it not only slide to left and right, but the body will make a curve as well.

This unusual presentation makes it possible to perform more action in short distance, while other pencilbait will move away from the striking area after a few jerk. Not only an interesting lures to try on but also seriously made for hooking up fish like peacock bass and also effective for Malaysia snakehead species.

(13) WATER MONITOR (Lake Police, Jackall)

These are the real sinking pencilbaits that purposely design for under surface dog walking.

The successful secret of Water Monitor is the inner structure with a resin plate. This special construction spread the weight evenly throughout the body, creating maximum momentum while "walking", sending clear and strong pulse to the fish lateral line.

Very good casting distance for it size, apply countdown method to walk this doggie in different depth of water, and if retrieve fast with the rod tip up, it can also walk the dog on the surface. A weapon for rising sebarau and feeding peacock in freshwater and proven on queenfish when you head for saltwater luring game.

Goova 80 has rounder body, heavier weight and makes larger sliding. If retrieve steadily, the small cup in front will make the lure to tail swing. It can also make a surface action like Water monitor with additional splashing.

Switching in between these two lures while fishing at the same spot may extent the feeding mood and increase catches.

(15) ARMS PENCIL MAGNUM

The concept of this lure is for everyone to walk a dog with ease. This one is a bigger version from the original Arms Pencil, calling power is up graded following the increase of body size, and easier to control too.

The small little groove under the mouth helps it to make tiny sound like small fish breathing or feeding on the surface, which will switch on the feeding mood of predators. Not too shiny chrome effect is clearer on cloudy day and dark water. A good lure for both veterans and beginners too.

(16) BITE RUSH SURFACE PENCIL (Tiemco)

Curve body with a level floating angle always mean smooth and easy slide for a pencilbait, moreover, the combination of the used of double hook and level floating position have add snagless ability to this pencilbait.

Big size body also means an easy target for an ambush fish. Some anglers may feel that the size is a bit too large, but in some situation, long casting distance and good action play a more important role to trigger a bite.

(17) TERROR (Zeal)

Zeal is a Japanese lure maker that specializes in top water lures, famous among top water lure enthusiast. Terror is a level floating lure with sliding action. Looks funny and interesting, but after a few cast, you will find the presentation potential is amazingly attractive and will agree that this is a serious fishing tool.

Well known for its quality control, only 2/3 of the lures will qualified to pack in box. Grab one on hand and you will understand that it's grateful to own one.

(18) TIN SUBMARINE TH604 (Tackle Hompo)

It is a toy for anglers, but if you really work it out on the water, don't be too surprise if it turns up to be the lure of the day! Design done by a famous Japanese angler, high tone rattling noise created by contact of two metals is very rare, proven to be a feeding bell for fish.

Manage to perform types of action, include, dog walk, twitch and dive, and even subsurface dog walking. When fish is chasing but not aggressive enough to decide a bite, lower down your rod and twitch, the diving, turning and darting action may help you to pull the attacking trigger.

(19) VEGETABLE FAMILIES (Morris)

It's hard to categorize this lure, whether it is a pencil or a propeller. Somehow it can make a short twitch type of dog walk. The mushroom head floats on the surface with the tail section hanging horizontally in the water. Most of the anglers will think that this is a joke when they first saw it, without knowing that it actually had a good record in catching haruan.

The suspending hook on the tail section has a high hooking ability. Jerk or fast retrieve will make the head spin creating splash and sound. If short jerk, besides spinning its head, the tail will swing as well.

(20) TARAILON (Imakatsu)

An outstanding design by Japan top bass angler, Katutake Imae. A very powerful lure, metal bearing inside body making loud sound, super strong calling power even in deep water.

If a peacock bass give a bite on it, then it should be a big one. More suitable for toman among Malaysia freshwater species. Also a good check lure when covering wide area in short time is necessary.

(21) TSURU PEN SLIM (Tsuru-Lures)

The actual purpose of this lure is meant for saltwater, since the balancing is perfectly done, it is as great when you cast it into a freshwater pond.

Come in two sizes, these pencil perform a left and right dog walking action. Use the 9cm one for peacock bass and sebarau. Switch to 13cm when toman is around.

The material feels like a balsa wood but actually made of synthetic polybalsa, which is much lasting than balsa wood. Built to cast on the sea, that's why it has long distance cast ability, which turn to be an advantage while doing land base fishing in pond.

Prawn World Udang Galah Center Special Offer for PMPP Members

Fishing for freshwater prawns or Udang Galah is quite an interesting experience. Last week Mr Arumugam and I went to try it out and managed to get 11 Udang Galah between us in an hour. After speaking to the owner Mr Azhar, we have managed to get a special rate for PMPP members.

The normal rate is 10 Ringgit an hour, on producing the PMPP membership card, members are entitled to an extra 15 minutes per hour

All the equipment and bait are provided. The special prawn rod, hook and float plus fresh chicken heart for bait. Catching them is not that easy, but the pond is well stocked and kids can have fun catching them too. A nice pastime for the whole family and you can cook up the prawns after that too! In addition since it is indoors it doesn't matter if it rains.

On weekdays the Prawn World is open from 12pm to 12.30am. On weekends, they open earlier at 10am.

Prawn World is located along Jalan Gelugor, after the RECSAM teacher's college, before the Perodua center.

Perfect spots for avid anglers

THE thrill and satisfaction of reeling in a giant game fish, the envious glares that follow and the spot where that prized catch lands will forever be etched in any angler’s memory.

For most anglers, Penang will always be special because of her unique surrounding landscapes and of course, waters and rivers that are brimming with marine life.

Many of these anglers may have travelled the world over in pursuit of “the one that got away” but they will all have at least a couple of interesting tales to tell when it comes to angling in Penang.

Malaysian Angling Associa-tion president Major (rtd) Is-mail Feisol, who was recently in town to help promote and de-velop angling as Penang’s ne-west tourism attraction, firmly believes that serious anglers fish for the passion and satisfaction of the sport, not to satisfy their appetites.

“If you intend to have fish for dinner, don’t bother going fishing – it is cheaper to just buy it from the market. Make no mistake, it can be a very expensive hobby but it can also be among the cheapest sporting activities in the world.

GOOD FISHING PLACE:Penang will always be special when it comes to angling because of her unique diverse landscapes with rivers and surrounding waters that are brimming with marine life.

GREAT SPOT:The rocky shoreline on the north-west of Penang island facing the open sea is popular among anglers.

“For less than 10 sen, you could probably have a jolly good time angling at one of the many lakes and rivers here.

“When I was a boy, all I needed was a safety pin, thread and long stick to keep me occupied (and out of trouble) the whole day. Angling is so much a part of our Malaysian culture. Ask most local anglers and they will tell you that’s how they first got hooked on the hobby.

“Of course today I have the latest ‘toys’ in the market and have travelled to some of the world’s best-known angling spots but I will never forget my trusty, self-made rod and local waters,” he said, adding that Penang was a good place for sport fishing enthusiasts.

“One of our biggest angling fans is Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and he is a Penangite.

“The state is already a world famous tourist destination and with various infrastructures like jetties, chalets and hotels, it is about time we start promoting it among anglers.

“There are lots of friendly lo-cal fishermen here who know the waters and make very good angling guides. From freshwater and estuary fishing to deep-sea saltwater fishing, anglers visiting the island have more than a handful of places to venture out to,” he said, adding that the association would like to see the state play host to Ma-laysia’s first Tenggiri Run competition at the end of the year.

“We have suggested to the state to organise the overnight offshore fishing competition in the Teluk Bahang waters. It would be the first of its kind in the country and I am confident that it can attract international participation.

“The Teluk Bahang, Ayer Itam and Mengkuang dams also have potential to be developed into sport fishing venues. Pe-nang is a strategic location for anglers because it is central to angling haunts like the Muda Dam in Kedah, Pulau Perak in Langkawi and Tasik Temenggor in Perak.

“These places are mostly only about two hours away. An-glers who stay at the island can opt to venture to these nearby destinations or contend with the equally interesting Penang waters,” he said, adding that the Balik Pulau and Teluk Ba-hang canals (or parit and long-kang to locals) have attracted the attention of many foreign anglers.

“I know anglers from Austra-lia, Denmark and Japan who have come here just to fish,” he said.

Engineering consultant Mohd Zambri Mohd Akhir, 32, agrees.

He has written (and been featured in) many articles on angling and cites the Sungai Pi-nang longkang in Teluk Bahang as among his favourite spots.

“I have been fishing for more than 20 years and this brac- kish water longkang is one of my favourite Tarpon hunting grounds,” he said.

His angling buddy, Muham-mad Akashah, 26, describes himself as a “hardcore angler”, travelling to the sleepy Teluk Bahang village at least four times a week to indulge in his favourite pastime.

“Zambri and I are members of the ‘Longkang Gang’ (a community of anglers) and we have introduced this place to many enthusiasts through our blog,” the estate manager said.

Describing the Teluk Bahang village as a “must-visit” angler’s destination, Major Ismail said the fishing village offered en-thusiasts the choice of going out to sea, fishing from the brackish water canal or Sungai Pinang River.

“The mangrove swamp at the mouth of the river is excellent if you are looking for Siakap and Mangrove Jacks.

“The natural beauty and se-renity of the place is unrivalled. The swamp’s most famous in-habitants are the biawak ba- tik and these rare beauties make the experience more than worth your while.

“Avid anglers will agree that beyond the challenge of pitting their skills against the fish, they would travel miles just to enjoy the rustic scenery,” he said.

Penang Angling Association president Arumugam Karup-piah said Penang was popular among local anglers because the surrounding waters were rich with game fish.

“Of course, you have to know where and when to go. Luck is also important. Our association has been organising angling competitions for many years now and feedback from participants has been positive,” he said.

Family Fishing Competition Part 2

So on to the fishing action! It was a hot day and everybody had their own style of fishing. Here is the "Fish out in the sun and get burnt as long as the fish are biting!" Style! I haven't even put my hook in the water and Roslan already caught 2 siakap!

Here is the spirit of a great family fishing morning...everyone gets to fish and stay comfortable. All the kids get a chance to catch a big siakap and learn about Catch & Release. They will be fishermen for life!
Ah yes...this is the life! Let those crazy people stay in the sun...I have a comfy chair and shade...and this is the spot with lots of fish too! Smart guy!

Ya those sheds are the best, you get to catch fish and show off to your fishing pals next to you. Amidst the "putus putus!" plus other encouragement to lose the fish, it makes the fishing all the more fun.
Everyone was engrossed with fishing, the siakap were biting consistently with some catching a siakap with each cast.
A good sized siakap just before being released back to fight another day! I don't really have many snaps of the siakaps as I was too busy fishing and the fish were being released back quickly after being caught.
But yes we were having lots of fun!
Alwie, the RodWarrior showed his steadfastness. He was out there sweating it out in the sun cathing fish consistently every minute of the competition.
And fish by fish he caught up from behind to get 15...25...31...37 siakap in total to get 2nd place! When no one else was catching fish at 12pm, he was still going strong. Well done Rodwarrior!

You could also easily catch small Gobis along the edge of the ponds to use as live bait to get bigger fish.
And again...everyone was having a good time fishing together! I just have too many pictures to share...I will continue in Part 3 soon!

Family Fishing Competition in Pictures Part 1

We started off early from Penang for the 1.5 hour drive to the Bedong Angling Park in Sungai Petani. It was going to be a bright hot sunny day!
The door was opened for us as we arrived through the last 2km over a dirt road.
Inside some had arrived even earlier for the 9am start. Francis was busy with registration and handing out the score cards for the Catch & Release Competition plus the de-barbed 3.0 circle hooks.
He was so busy taking care of the registration that he didn't have a chance to fish! Good job Francis!
Everyone was getting their tackle ready while making new friends and discussing tactics to bring in the most and biggest fish!
Fly Fishin, Spin Fishing, Spin-Flying....anything goes as long as it is Catch & Release!

"Well my boyfriend is preparing the tackle...I just catch the fish!" Actually she's a great fisherwomen and caught more fish than most!
Freddy and his son were ready to fish despite Freddy being down with a bad Flu...nothing can stop a real fisherman!

Congratulations to the winners! But most of all thanks to all who came in making this a successful event! We had 35 participants who came in early and we had a lot of catches. The top number of fishes caught was a whopping 47! Followed by runner ups of 37 and 33. However almost everyone had a prize from the lucky draw, as there were 25 prizes to be won. A full report will follow but here are some pics to keep you happy for now!

Fishing Competition Fury!

I was reading this in the Star Newspaper :

KANGAR: Angry anglers dumped a car into the sea after they did not get the prizes promised in a lucky draw of a fishing competition.

Some 3,000 anglers had earlier been vying for a Proton Gen2, motorcycles, vacation trips and cash prizes totalling RM30,000 at Kuala Sungai Baru, Kuala Perlis.

SHOW OF ANGER: Curious passers-by looking at the car which was pushed into the sea by angry anglers in Kuala Perlis on Saturday.

When the prize presentation ceremony came at 5.30pm, there were no cars or motorcycles.

The anglers then demanded a refund of the RM40 they had each paid to take part.

When this was not met, some of them pushed the car belonging to one of the officials into the sea.They also held two officials “captive” but released them when the police arrived.

According to the competition advertisement, the Proton Gen2 was to be the first prize in the lucky draw, followed by three Modenas Kriss motorcycles and six fishing sets.

The first three winners in the competition were promised cash prizes and the fourth to the 20th winners were to get vacation trips to Sabah and Tioman.

Kangar OCPD Supt Yusof Mohd Diah said the incident occurred due to the unkept promises of the organisers.A participant, Shafie Sawal, 54, from Padang Besar, said the event started on a bad note when the organisers delayed the competition time from 9am to noon.

“Some of the participants who did not want to take part asked for a refund but the organisers refused.

“The rest who continued to take part in the competition waited until 5.30pm for the prize presentation.

“When there were no prizes, the anglers became angry and the situation got out of control,” he said.

Sembang Sembang at the Esplanade

Last Friday we had our Sembang Sembang session at the center of the Penang Esplanade. The Sembang Sembang session is to promote fishing in Penang as a recreational activity and also to introduce the public to PMPP. Basically we were there from 8pm to 11pm (just before the World Cup Kickoff!) fishing and talking to the interested people walking by. We set up a small table and had nasi lemak and mineral water available to anyone interested.

Yes there still are some fish in Penang!

At about 8 something, we all gathered at the batu maung jetty to board our boat, 'Say Yes'. Yes, we had to say yes, as the weather was very obliging: blue skies, nice clouds, no strong winds, water as calm as mirror...ahhh... all in the luxury of a comfortable boat!

with a total of 280hp, we soon sped off to our designated Secret Spot known as the, well, The Secret Spot hehehe. the boat was parked perfectly, and then we waited for Kacuakman to signal us to drop our metal jigs. as soon as he gave us the green light, our ever enthusiastic Dato' dropped his jig immediately as usual lah. hhehehehehe.

our captain, Kacuakman's uncle, with the very 1st senangin. u should see him jig! he's the mannnn..

for the 1st hour or so, he managed to land 3 already while we look in awe, wondering if he 'jampi-ed' his jig earlier hehehehhe.

then, came The Lansi One's time to shine. well, he was shining till we ended our session lah. he was hitting senangins one after another like nobody's business. well, being in the boat with him CAN be the most torturing experience, as he will continuously praise himself, example:

1. wahhhh, i'm too good. why i am so good?
2. aiyohh, very tired lah, caught too many big ones!
3. aiyooh, very boring lah, how come i'm the only one getting fish?
4. come, let me teach u how laaaa

and so on and so forth. someone should bring a video cam to record these down.

i'm not going to post too many pics of him here coz my camera is full of his pics. it's torturing, but it's true. 2 thumbs up for The Lansi One!!! hahaha

Mighty Sild aka Arabian Knight cannot tahan Culky's antics anymore and proved that he was another force to be reckoned with when he landed this amazing specimen:

from there on, it was Culky vs Sild, both trying to outdo each other. Culky became lansi(errr, we know that already, don't we?) and then lepak-ed a bit, and Sild caught up. after a gruesome battle, the score ended with Culky 9 vs Sild's 8. it was an epic battle not to be forgotten.

Kcuakman wasn't having much luck earlier, and managed the most extraordinary catch. it wasn't a foul hook. let the pics do the talking. unbelieveable!

just right after that, he got his momentum back and voila! he's back to being our Senanginman once again! he was back in contention with Culky & Sild, with only a margin of one fish in between them!

by that time, me & jeymatt who were still eating chicken eggs, was under tremendous pressure! but finally persistance paid off when we got our 1st senangins! the looks on our faces tell the whole story lah. felt like 2-tonnes we're lifted from our chests!

our Pla buk champ Jeymatt is indeed a hardcore angler, with just 4 hours of sleep before joining our offshore trip. well done to u!

after hitting number 30, we immediately stopped jigging for them and unanimously decided that this was to be our bag limit. final tally was 31 as we left out another(or it jumped into our icebox hehehe)

we soon switched spots to some other wrecks for some bottom fishing to lepak and chill out after JIGGING NON-STOP from 9am-2pm! nothing much from here, except for THE LANSI ONE who kept on hitting Oteks after oteks.... here's the making of an Otek King hahahahha. a few sembilangs, gelamas and a flathead was caught before we called it a day.

in the spirit of togetherness, we shared the catches equally, thanx to the 3 to hardcore anglers: Culky, Sild & Kacuakman who 'donated' their catches to us poor buggers hahahhaha. thanx a bunch guys for the fish, but most of all, a very very enjoyable and happy day of fishing! many thanx to Kacuakman & Kacuakman's Uncle, who has been so kind to all of us to have us along their boat! Looking forward to fishing with u all again! till then...........THE END

One of our PMPP committee, Roslan, just had a trip to Maldives...here's the story!

Our arrival in Maldives after a 3.5 hour flight from KLIA.The airport itself is an island and the only means of transport is by boat.The capital,Male,is a 5 minute boat ride away.

Notice the crystal clear waters and the coral bed? This place is 6 hours from Male.You can see boat building activities in the background.

What I think about Maldives....Fishing Paradise.
20-30 kg YFT just swimming around you accompanied by other species of tuna,hundreds of rainbow runners alongside,landing many 3-10kg pari when we were docked at the island,not to mention the Bonefish and Goatfish.The whole place was just a BIIIG Swimming Pool.The sand on the island was coral sand and only on the beach do you find beach sand.Most of the inhabited islands have got phone service and the signal is very strong even far out at sea so no communication problems here.
I only got one complaint about Maldives....I did not get to fish enough

Casting Technique : Pitching

I just learnt a new way of casting today. It's very easy and very accurate indeed! I wonder why I didn't think of it earlier! It's called pitching and I just read it at bassresource.

The Pitch Cast (Pitchin')

This is best for targets between 10 and 30 feet away and provides a very quiet lure entry. Use a rod 6 1/2 feet or longer and a single-hook lure such as a worm, jig or spinnerbait. Face the target. Let out line until the lure is even with the reel. Hold the lure in your free hand at waist level. Lower the rod tip toward the water and put tension on the line. In one smooth, quick motion, swing the rod tip forward toward the target and upward, letting go of the lure with your free hand. Use only your wrist, arm movement is not a factor. As the lure moves from beneath the rod tip, release the line and continue raising the rod tip. (On bait casting gear, this cast requires a very light setting on the spool tension control, and you must know how to control the spool with your thumb, or the reel will backlash.) The lure should fly just above the water. Use a combination of line tension and rod movement to guide it to the target and to make it touch down softly. If you stop the bait just before it enters the water you'll almost always get a smooth entry. Immediately place your free hand on the reel and be ready for a strike.

It sounds complicated but it's actually very easy. It's more suitable for lure fishing and not for distance casting. It's amazing how accurate it is and how little space it takes to pitch.

Tips for Fishing Soft Plastics

Bassresource has a very nicely organised tip page.. Since I started using soft plastics to fish in the Bedong C&R pond, I've learnt more than I thought possible. No idea what is doodling, flipping and pitching? Check out the methods here.

Doodling

Doodling is a worm fishing technique mastered and taught by finesse fishing guru Don Iovino. It's best used on suspended bass in clear, deep lakes usually found in western America, but can be used on any lake that has clear to stained water.
Use either baitcasting or spinning gear on a 6-foot, medium-light action rod. Usually, spinning gear is preferred when using 6-8 pound test for deep fishing, and baitcasting for 10-pound and up when flipping. Place a small, glass bead between the worm and a brass sinker (some enthusiasts insist they must match in color, others say it doesn't matter). Use 4- to 4 1/2-inch worms on 1/0 hooks, and 3-inch grubs on size 1 hooks. Paddle tail worms are best suited in the spring whereas straight tailed worms work best in the fall and winter. Use a 3/16-ounce weight when working the bottom on deep structure, a 5/32-ounce weight on suspended bass.

The Technique
Let the bait fall to the preferred depth, then shake your rod tip. You've got their attention now, so just wait - at least 30 seconds. Then shake again for about 2 or 3 seconds, stop and pull slowly about six inches. Then drop slowly back down again and repeat the process. The first thing to change if they're not biting is to slow down. In depths of forty feet or more, the bite feels like a slight pull, like the pressure you feel when stretching a rubber band. Set the hook when ever you feel this or anything else "odd".

Bedong Angling Park,Sungai Petani is now officially Open

The pond where we had our family fishing competition is now officially open! Here is more information from MFN Forums :

Dear fellow fishos & forumers,

Just to announce that Bedong Angling Park which is located at the outskirts of Sungai Petani is now officially Open! Bedong Angling Park is also the first catch & release sportfishing pond in Northern Region. It's also on group booking basis only.

Bedong Angling Park has 3 retention ponds which caters to private commercial Tigerprawn farm and now the 3 retention ponds also serve as a fishing paradise for sportfishing anglers with it's semi-wild habitat and species. A couple of lunker Barramundi above 10kg are still lurking within one of these ponds which have yet to be landed.

The nearest hook-up of that lunker was yours truly... I was fishing for Brackish Tilapia few months back and while I was fighting the fish halfway on ultra-light, from no-where the 10kg+ Barramundi swam from the side and swallowed the approximately 400g Tilapia WHOLE and sped off! Yup, and you are right, my 4lb mainline burst without giving me any chance to even fight the Lunker! It has been my nightmare ever since and it also has been my dream to ever have a fair fight with it again if given a chance.

Ok, enuff of true story telling and back to more details of Bedong Angling Park.

Species of fish: Barramundi, Golden Snapper, Tarpon, Ladyfish and Brackish Tilapia.

Rules & Regulations:
1) Strictly on lures, soft plastic or flies with barbless/debarbed hook and berleying is forbidden. 2) Only 1 barbless/debarbed treble hook are allowed on the lure. You have to remove either the belly treble hook or the tail treble hook. Or you can also change all the trebles hooks to barless/debarbed single hooks.
3) Any fish above 1kg(your discretion) advisable to use landing net to land it.
4) Shock leaders advisable to use minimum of 25lb and above.
5) Fish has to be gently released into the water and if fish is over stressed after the fight, kindly recuperate it in the water before letting go.For any enquiries or booking, you can call either

Fishing First Aid : Dengue Fever

"In 2005, dengue is the most important mosquito-borne viral disease affecting humans; its global distribution is comparable to that of malaria, and an estimated 2.5 billion people live in areas at risk for epidemic transmission. Each year, tens of millions of cases of Dengue Fever occur and, depending on the year, up to hundreds of thousands of cases of Dengue Haemorhagic Fever. The case-fatality rate of DHF in most countries is about 5%, but this can be reduced to less than 1% with proper treatment. Most fatal cases are among children and young adults."

Every year there is an outbreak of Dengue Fever here in Malaysia. This year it is a particularly bad strain, having caused about 7 deaths already. You can get Dengue twice, as there are different strains of the Dengue Flavivirus. I thought this might be relevant for Fishermen as we are exposed to mosquitoes especially in the evening. This article is on how to avoid dengue, not to go into the medical details of it.

TIPS for Avoiding Mosquito Bites

Mosquitoes are attracted to things that remind them of nectar or mammal flesh. When outdoors, wear light clothing that covers most of the body, keeping as much skin and hair covered as practical. Avoid bright, floral colors. Khaki, beige, and olive have no particular attraction for mosquitoes. Wear light colors during the daytime, as dark clothing during daylight hours actually attracts the little buggers.
They are also attracted by some body odors, and for this reason they choose some individuals over others in a crowd. Avoid fragrances in soaps, shampoos, and lotions.
Many species of mosquito prefer biting from dusk until dawn. The problem is worse when the weather is hot or humid. Avoid playing outdoors during the peak biting times in your area.
Try to stay away from still water. (hahaha for fishermen!)
Use Insect Repellent on exposed skin when you go outdoors. Use an EPA-registered insect repellent such as those with DEET, picaridin or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Even a short time being outdoors can be long enough to get a mosquito bite.
Clothing Can Help Reduce Mosquito BitesWhen weather permits, wear long-sleeves, long pants and socks when outdoors. Mosquitoes may bite through thin clothing, so spraying clothes with repellent containing permethrin or another EPA-registered repellent will give extra protection. Don't apply repellents containing permethrin directly to skin. Do not spray repellent on the skin under your clothing.
Pediatric insect repellents with only 6-10% DEET are available.
Some studies suggest that taking thiamine (vitamin B1) 25mg to 50 mg three times per day is effective in reducing mosquito bites. This safe vitamin apparently produces a skin odor that is not detectable by humans, but is disagreeable to pregnant mosquitoes (Pediatric Clinics of North America, 16:191, 1969). It seems to be especially effective for those people with large allergic reactions. Thiamine takes about 2 weeks before the odor fully saturates the skin.
Garlic may work in the same way (except, of course, the odor is detectable by humans), but I have seen no scientific studies supporting this.
Avoid perfumes when outside. Using hand creams and lotions with a sweet scent can also increase your risk of attracting mosquitoes, so go for the unscented varieties during mosquito season. Try using unscented soaps when showering, too. Even though they're rinsed off, the scent remains on your skin and attracts bugs.
Mosquitoes are attracted to perspiration, heat, carbon dioxide, and lactic acid. All of these are produced after exercising, so avoid outdoor exercise during peak mosquito hours (at dawn and dusk). Our bodies also release lactic acid after eating certain foods, so avoiding outdoor dining during those hours is helpful, as well. Commonly believed mosquito-attracting foods include bananas (or other potassium-rich food items), and salty foods.
What does not work?
Vitamin B, garlic, thiamine, and "ultrasonic" devices are NOT effective in preventing mosquito bites. (Means you can try la, but don't put too much trust in them)

Good evening all members of the Persatuan and family members. This competition is unlike other competitions where the fish is caught and released and this is to protect theresources and also to prevent catching fish which is too small for the table. This "Catch and release fishing competition" is unique. (Enjoy the new experience)Persatuan Memancing Pulau Pinang leads the way for other clubs to follow.

For this to materialize we are indeed grateful to Mr. Tan Boon Thye, owner of this place for allowing us to pursue one of the Persatuan's activities i.e. "Catch and Release". Despite the fact that his stock of fish may be hurt and traumatized during the event, he is prepared to sacrifice his loss for the sake of PMPP. We are also grateful to Mr. H.T Kuan, his daughter, Ah Pengand his family who assisted us to promote this event. A lot of sacrifice and time was spent by our Dr. Chan Chee Keong who took pains to prepare the entry forms and also help to liase with Ah Peng. The organizing chairman, Francis Khoo together with Chee Keong and Rozlan Meah for helping me to prepare the groundwork for this event.

I would like to thank Regent Photo for preparing the Certificate of Appreciation free of
charge, Lucky Craft for sponsoring the top 3 prizes, our treasurer Mr. Siew Kam Weng

Short Article : Siakap Fishing in Sungai Petani

In August, the PMPP committee had the priveledge to visit a special pond in Sungai Petani in which we would be having the Family Fishing Competition. The owner was gracious enough to allow us to fish from 3 water retention ponds that were meant to store water for his tiger prawn ponds. It was not a commercial pond, but the 2 large ponds were stocked with Siakap(Barramundi) ranging from 600gm to 15kg! There were not fed regularly and so the Siakap were pretty hungry!The ponds were filled with a mixture of salt and fresh water pumped from the nearby tidal river and is perfect for siakap action!

The drive from Penang to the pond which is in Sugai Petani Utara took about 1 hour. The final 2km was through a red earth road and was a bit bumpy. Finally we came to the fenced off area in which the ponds looked invitingly fishable. It was already 4pm by the time we were ready to fish and we all happily casted our barbless lures into the water. Francis, the resident lure expert seemed to be the only one catching siakap after siakap with each cast! Finally I swallewed my pride and borrowed his secret weapon : A simple small weighted Jig Head adorned with a green soft plastic squid.The trick was to use light line, about 6-8 pounds and cast out into the pond, allowing it to sink to the bottom first, then retrieving it slowly. Wham! The siakap loved it! Cast after cast the siakap took the barbless lure and displayed it's acrobatic nature! In the 3 hours I was there, I had 50 hookups but landed only half of them. They were promptly released to be fished another day! Even jigging for the Siakap 3 feet away was met with vigorous and surprising strikes! Check out this video of jigging for siakaps.

There were also other fish in the pond, namely ladyfish and tarpon. However they seemed uninterested in our offerings. Some of the other fishermen were fly fishing and were also very successful in catching the barramundi and an odd tarpon here and there.
After 3 hours we were satisfied and ready to eat! The owner prepared a sumptuous barbeque dinner of corn, crabs, mantis prawn, siakap and kembong with local fruits to satisfy our stomachs!
We went home very satisfied and we hope you will take the opportunity to fish there during the family fishing competition this Saturday! Such a great spot is meant to be shared, as it is not open to public on normal occasions. Happy fishing!

Fishing First Aid : Drowning

This is probably the worst thing that could happen to a fisherman, so best be prepared for it. It's not uncommon to see a small newspaper article saying this or that person drowned in a mining pool.

Prevention is of course better than cure, use your brain first.

Forget about retrieving that expensive lure, it's not worth your life. Wear that life jacket properly, it will save your life.

OK here are some tips for Near-Drowning first aid. Technically if you had drowned it would be too late already, so it's actually referred to as Near-Drowning.

Near Drowning: First Aid

When someone is drowning, get help immediately, but do not place yourself in danger. Do not get into the water or go out onto ice unless your own safety can be assured. Rescue options may include extending a long pole or branch to the victim, or using a throw rope attached to a buoyant object, such as a life ring or life jacket. Toss it to the floundering person, then pull him or her to shore.

Keep in mind that victims who have fallen through the ice become hypothermic very rapidly and may not be able to grasp objects within their reach or hold on while being pulled to safety.

If a person is still floundering in the water and you are appropriately trained to attempt rescue yourself, do so immediately if conditions do not pose undue risk to your own safety.
Do not be a hero...normally the rescuer drowns as well...

If there is any likelihood of spinal injury, care must be taken to stabilize the victim's head and neck at all times during the rescue and resuscitation.

If the victim's breathing has stopped, begin rescue breaths as soon as you safely can. This often means starting the breathing process while still in the water.

Continue to breathe for the person every few seconds while moving them to shore. Once on land, check for a pulse (or other signs of circulation, such as spontaneous breathing, coughing, or movement) and administer CPR if needed.

For step-by-step instructions on rescue breathing, see CPR and rescue breathing first aid.

The Heimlich maneuver should not be used routinely in the rescue of near-drowning victims. It should be used only if the airway is blocked with debris or vomit, and you are unable to successfully ventilate the victim (unable to get air into the the lungs with proper rescue breaths). Since most drowning victims do not breathe in large quantities of water, immediate rescue breaths are effective without first draining the lungs. Furthermore, performing the Heimlich maneuver unnecessarily may increase the chances that an unconscious victim will vomit, and subsequently choke on the vomitus.

Always use caution when moving a drowning victim. Always assume that the victim may have a neck or spine injury, and avoid turning or bending the neck. Take appropriate steps to immobilize the head and neck during resuscitation and transport. Either tape it to a backboard or stretcher, or secure the neck by placing rolled towels or other objects around it. It is important to keep the victim calm and to keep them immobilized. Seek medical help immediately.

In order to prevent hypothermia, remove any cold, wet clothes from the victim and cover him with something warm, if possible.

Once the victim is stabilized, administer first aid for any other serious injuries.

As the victim revives, he may cough and experience difficulty breathing. Calm and reassure the victim until you get medical help. All near-drowning victims should be seen by a health care provider. Even though victims may revive quickly at the scene, lung complications are common.

Fishing First Aid : Sunburns

Once the fish start biting...all other things are forgotten...and many fishermen get very bad sunburn! Prevention is of course better than cure...so... SLIP, SLOP, SLAP!

SLIP on a light cotton t-shirt, preferably long sleeved.
SLOP on some sun-block lotion of at least SPF 30+
SLAP on a hat, preferably with a wide brim to protect your ears and neck.

This is a good example! He is well covered and probably does not need to put on sun block since he is already well protected and comfortable!

More Prevention Tips

Avoid sun exposure during hours of peak sun ray intensity.
Apply generous amounts of sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Pay special attention to your face, nose, ears, and shoulders. The higher the SPF, the greater the protection.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes prior to sun exposure to allow penetration. Re-apply after swimming and every 2 hours while you are outdoors.
Wear sun hats. There is also SPF clothing and swimwear available.
Wear sunglasses with UV protection.
Use a lip balm with sunscreen.

Another good example of a well protected fisherkid.
And of course she learnt it from her well protected fisherdad!

So why is sun burn so dangerous?

Keep in mind:

There is no such thing as a "healthy tan". Unprotected sun exposure causes premature aging of the skin.

Sun exposure can cause first and second degree burns.

Skin cancer usually appears in adulthood, but is caused by sun exposure and sunburns that began as early as childhood. You can help prevent skin cancer by protecting your skin and your children's skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Factors that make sunburn more likely:

Infants and children are especially sensitive to the burning effects of the sun.
People with fair skin are more likely to get sunburn. But even dark and black skin can burn and should be protected.
The sun's rays are strongest during the hours of 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The sun's rays are also stronger at higher altitudes and lower latitudes (closer to the tropics). Reflection off water, sand, or snow can intensify the sun's burning rays.
Sun lamps can cause severe sunburn.
Some medications (such as the antibiotic doxycycline) can make you more susceptible to sunburn.

Symptoms

The first signs of a sunburn may not appear for a few hours. The full effect to your skin may not appear for 24 hours or longer. Possible symptoms include:

Red, tender skin that is warm to touch.
Blisters that develop hours to days later.
Severe reactions (sometimes called "sun poisoning"), including fever, chills, nausea, or rash.
Skin peeling on sunburned areas several days after the sunburn.

First Aid

Try taking a cool bath or shower. Or place wet, cold wash cloths on the burn for 10 to 15 minutes, several times a day. You can mix baking soda in the water to help relieve the pain. (Small children may become easily chilled, so keep the water tepid.)

Apply a soothing lotion to the skin.

Aloe gel is a common household remedy for sunburns. Aloe contains active compounds that help stop pain and inflammation of the skin.

An over-the-counter pain medication, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen may be helpful. DO NOT give aspirin to children.

Do Not

DO NOT apply petroleum jelly, benzocaine, lidocaine, or butter to the sunburn. They make the symptoms worse and can prevent healing. Butter can actually promote certain types of bacteria to multiply and lead to a serious infection.

DO NOT wash burned skin with harsh soap.

So remember to dress sensibly. Most experienced fishermen will have their favourite outfit. Only amatuers go out in t-shirt and shorts (umm like me sometimes!) and suffer terrible sunburn like a cooked lobster!

Fishing First Aid : Snakebites

For the adventurous angler, snakes are an inevitable encounter in the jungle path to our favourite secret fishing spot. Prevention is of course better than cure, so...

Preventing Snake Bites

1. Wear thick hiking boots and heavy pants if you are going into the jungle
2. Make a lot of noise...snakes will hear your footsteps and slither away
3. Be careful when stepping over a log or stone as snakes like to hide underneath
4. Never hike alone
5. If you see a snake, don't chase it or corner it, stay still and let it go away
6. Don't try to be the Croc Hunter and catch the snake la.

Ok now that that is out of the way, I had the priveledge of meeting Professor Struan Sutherland in Melbourne University as he gave us this lecture on venomous snake bites in Australia. The first aid is called the Pressure Immobilisation Method.

The pressure-immobilisation first aid technique was developed in the 1970's by Professor Struan Sutherland. Its purpose is to retard the movement of venom from the bite site into the circulation, thus "buying time" for the patient to reach medical care. Research with snake venom has shown that very little venom reaches the blood stream if firm pressure is applied over the bitten area and the limb is immobilised. Pressure-immobilisation was initially developed to treat snakebite, but it is also applicable to bites and stings by some other venomous creatures. It is currently recommended for most life threatening venomous bites and stings in Australia.

How to apply pressure-immobilisation first aid

Bites to the lower limb
	1. Apply a broad pressure bandage over the bite site as soon as possible. Crepe bandages are ideal, but any flexible material may be used. Clothing, towels etc may be torn into strips. Panty hose have been successfully used. Do not take off clothing, as the movement of doing so will promote the movement of venom into the blood stream. Keep the bitten limb, and the patient, still. Bandage upwards from the lower portion of the bitten limb. Even though a little venom may be squeezed upwards, the bandage will be more comfortable, and therefore can be left in place for longer if required.
	2. The bandage should be as tight as you would apply to a sprained ankle.
	3. Extend the bandage as high as possible up the limb.
	4. Apply a splint to the leg. Any rigid object may be used as a splint. e.g. spade, piece of wood or tree branch, rolled up newspapers etc.
	5. Bind it firmly to as much of the leg as possible. Keep the patient still. Lie the patient down to prevent walking or moving around.
Bites to the hand or forearm
	Bandage as much of the arm as possible, starting at the fingers. Use a splint to the elbow. Use a sling to immobilise the arm. Keep the patient still. Lie the patient down to prevent walking or moving around.
Bites to the trunk	If possible apply firm pressure over the bitten area. Do no restrict chest movement. Keep the patient still.
Bites to the head or neck	No first aid for bitten area. Keep the patient still.

Research stresses the importance of keeping the patient still. This includes all the limbs. Bring transport to the patient if possible.

DO NOT cut or excise the bitten area.

DO NOT apply an arterial tourniquet. (Arterial tourniquets, which cut off the circulation to the limb, are potentially dangerous, and are no longer recommended for any type of bite or sting in Australia.)

DO NOT wash the bitten area. The type of snake involved may be identified by the detection of venom on the skin.If the snake can be safely killed, bring it to the hospital with the victim.

Note: Even if the bitten or stung person is ill when first seen, the application of pressure-immobilisation first aid may prevent further absorption of venom from the bite or sting site during transport to hospital.

Snakes that inject venom use modified salivary glands. Venom is a modified form of saliva and probably evolved to aid in chemical digestion. Varying degrees of toxicity also make it useful in killing prey. During envenomation (the bite that injects venom or poison), the venom passes from the venom gland through a duct into the snake's fangs, and finally into its prey. Snake venom is a combination of numerous substances with varying effects. In simple terms, these proteins can be divided into 4 categories:

1.Cytotoxins cause local tissue damage.

2.Hemotoxins cause internal bleeding.

3.Neurotoxins affect the nervous system.

4.Cardiotoxins act directly on the heart.

Signs and symptoms of snake poisoning can be broken into a few major categories:

Local effects: Bites by vipers and some cobras (Naja and other genera) are painful and tender. They can be severely swollen and can bleed and blister. Some cobra venoms can also kill the tissue around the site of the bite.

Bleeding: Bites by vipers and some Australian elapids can cause bleeding of internal organs such as the brain or bowels. A victim may bleed from the bite site or bleed spontaneously from the mouth or old wounds. Unchecked bleeding can cause shock or even death.

Nervous system effects: Venom from elapids and sea snakes can affect the nervous system directly. Cobra (Naja and other genera) and mamba (Dendroaspis) venom can act particularly quickly by stopping the breathing muscles, resulting in death without treatment. Initially, victims may have vision problems, speaking and breathing trouble, and numbness.

Muscle death: Venom from Russell's vipers (Daboia russellii), sea snakes, and some Australian elapids can directly cause muscle death in multiple areas of the body. The debris from dead muscle cells can clog the kidneys, which try to filter out the proteins. This can lead to kidney failure.

Eyes: Spitting cobras and ringhals (cobralike snakes from Africa) can actually eject their venom quite accurately into the eyes of their victims, resulting in direct eye pain and damage.

WHAT CAUSES THE TIDES?
Tides are periodic rises and falls of large bodies of water. Tides are caused by the gravitational interaction between the Earth and the Moon. The gravitational attraction of the moon causes the oceans to bulge out in the direction of the moon. Another bulge occurs on the opposite side, since the Earth is also being pulled toward the moon (and away from the water on the far side). Since the earth is rotating while this is happening, two tides occur each day. Isaac Newton was the first person to explain tides scientifically.

The Proxigean Spring Tide is a rare, unusually high tide. Bug Eats and Replaces Snapper's Tongue

A gross creature which gobbles up a fish's tongue and then replaces it with its own body has been found in Britain for the first time.
The bug - which has the scientific name cymothoa exigua - was discovered inside the mouth of a red snapper bought from a London fishmonger.
The 3.5cm creature had grabbed onto the fish's tongue and slowly ate away at it until only a stub was left. It then latched onto the stub and became the fish's "replacement tongue".
Looks like we better check out fishies before we eat curry fish head!
Cymothoa exigua, a crustacean, is the only known parasite that effectively replaces a body organ. It makes its home in the mouth of a fish, where it drains blood from the tongue until it withers and dies. It attaches itself to the remaining stub and the fish is actually able to utilize it as a replacement tongue to draw in and manipulate food, which the parasite shares.

Sometimes the best fishing spots require a trek through the jungle...and sometimes you may pick up an unwanted visitor. Here are some fishing stories :

Buffalo Leach!! Had close encounter with them in Temburong, Brunei. Unfed yet HUGE!! Was told 15 - 20 would be sufficient to kill you!!

So without further ado here are some first aid tips :

Leeches are found in ponds,swamps and stagnant water. They attach themselves to the human body by making a tiny hole in the skin. Forceful removal of leeches may cause injury to the skin and infection.They can be attached to the underside of rocks, vegetation and logs or around ponds and puddles. They are attracted by body warmth and movement, finding their way into socks and jeans, where they latch onto skin and begin sucking.

First Aid for leech bites:

1. Sprinkle some salt, bring a lighted match close to it, or apply turpentine or oil to its body. It will curl up and drop off by itself.

*do not pull or scrape it off the skin

2. Wash the area around the bite to remove the anticoagulant

3. Apply a weak solution of baking soda or ammonia to relieve irritation

4. Apply a dressing until the bleeding stops

How can I try to avoid them?

In leech infested areas always wear

* thick socks
* long trousers
* strong shoes
* rub tea-tree oil/insect repellent onto your skin

-There are basically two types of leeches: the water leech (lintah), and the landborne one (pacat). I guess we are talking of pacat lah
- Leeches don't like bright material. One tip is to wear something bright above your boots, so they don't climb up your torso. Some outdoor shops overseas sell leech socks with colours like shocking orange or chartreuse, for this purpose.
-Another kampung tip to prevent leeches is to rub lime juice on your legs. Of course the efficacy goes off once you cross a stream or something.
- be careful when you use Baygon; it is powerful. I get bad skin rashes, so I have stopped using it. Personally, I'd prefer to have the leeches bite me than to use poisons on my body.
- Some leeches are more potent than others. In my experience the most terrible leeches are those in Upper Endau, Sungai Sat (Taman Negara) and Sg Tisa (Kapit). Depending on season of course. I once had to extract 50 leeches from one leg, in Endau! But the Sg Sat leeches are champions: the sores persisted for 8 months! "

"An old jungle kaki gave me this tip;collect old gigarrette butts,tear out the tobacco and soak them in a bucket.Strain the juice and soak a pair of socks [your old football socks will do nicely] overnight.Dry them and wear them on your next trip.The scent will stop any leech from climbing on even if you have to wade thru water the scent won't wash off.Havent tried it myself but am going to try next week when I visit Belum.But be warned, the socks will be permanently stained,so dont use your best pair!"

Fishing First Aid : Jellyfish Stings

Jellyfish are very common in our tropical waters. They tend to be seasonal in Malaysia, mostly around in the months of June or July or the rainy monsoon in Nov, Dec. For fishermen it's important to know how to treat it especially when fishing t at sea and beach. Here are some tips taken from an excellent article from the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

1. Prevention is better than cure
Please do not go swimming if you can see jellyfish in the water! If you must, then you should wear a long sleeve t-shirt and pants, or a neoprene full 3mm or 5mm diving suit is best.Be careful when investigating jellyfish that have washed ashore. Although they may be dead, they may still be capable of inflicting stings. Don't go and poke it with a stick then show your friends!

2. Keep some Vinegar in your First Aid Kit
The Jellyfish contains Stinging Balloons called Nematocyts. They fire a little torpedo containing poison into your skin when it comes into contact. The MAIN AIM OF FIRST AID IS TO PREVENT THE NEMATOCYSTS FROM FIRING. Primary first aid for any jellyfish sting should be to minimize the number of nematocysts discharging into the skin and to reduce the harmful effects of the venom. If stung by a jellyfish, the victim should carefully remove the tentacles that adhere to the skin by using sand, clothing, towels, seaweed or other available materials. As long as tentacles remain on the skin, they will continue to discharge venom.

A variety of substances have been used to reduce the effects of jellyfish stings. Meat tenderizer, sugar, vinegar, plant juices and sodium bicarbonate have all been used with varying degrees of success. Methylated spirits and other forms of alcohol formerly recommended for inhibiting stinging cells actually stimulate them and may increase pain and cause severe skin reactions. Picric acid and human urine also cause a discharge of nematocysts and should not be used. Victims of serious stings should make every effort to get out of the water as soon as possible to avoid drowning. If swelling and pain from more serious stings persists, prompt medical attention should be sought. Recovery periods can vary from several minutes to several weeks.

3. Other Interesting Tips

For box jellyfish stings, douse the area with vinegar to inactivate any stinging cells that are still on the skin. Do not use vinegar on Portuguese man-of-war stings. An Australian study reported that vinegar causes stinging cells to fire when poured on some Portuguese man-of-war tentacles. For these stings, pluck off the tentacles, then rinse the area with water, either salt or fresh. The jury is still out on how fresh water affects stings, but try it. Some sting victims feel better after taking a shower.
So far in our study, some people report good pain relief from hot packs placed on the skin. Others say that cold packs work well. Still others have experienced no relief from either hot or cold packs on their stings.
The best pain treatment for jellyfish stings is by no means a clear call.

Does urinating on jellyfish stings help?

No. At best, this common folk remedy does nothing. At worst, it can fire undischarged stinging cells and make the sting worse.
When my doctor heard about our jellyfish study he said, "Great. I hope you tell people to stop urinating on every cut and sting they get in the ocean."

Life Cycles
The life cycle of a typical jellyfish involves an alteration of generations in which the animal passes through two different body forms. The dominant and conspicuous medusa is the familiar form, while the smaller polyp form is restricted to the larval stage. Jellyfish are either male or female and reproduce sexually. The reproductive organs (gonads) develop in the lining of the gut. During reproduction, the male releases sperm through its mouth into the water column. The sperm swims into the mouth of the female where fertilizationoccurs. Early embryonic development begins either inside the female or in brood pouches along the oral arms. Small swimming larvae (planula) leave the mouth or brood pouches and enter the water column. The larvae then seek a shaded surface and attach to the bottom, forming polyps. These polyps divide and bud into young jellyfish (ephyra). In a few weeks, an ephyra will grow into an adult medusa, thus completing the complex life cycle. Jellyfish normally live three to six months.

When fishing in a remote area or at sea, it's always prudent to have a first aid box available to handle minor emergencies. You can buy a small first aid box at a pharmacy or put one together yourself. Here are some items that should be included in the Fisherman's First Aid Kit.

Fishing First Aid Box

1. Water Proof Plasters
2. Cotton wool/ gauze/ elastic bandage
3. Flavin/ Dettol Antiseptic lotion/ Alcohol swabs
4. Antiseptic cream/ Like neomycin
5. Medications : Panadol, Novomin(Sea Sick Tablets), Piriton (For Allergies)
6. Small bottle of vinegar (for neutralising jellyfish stings)
7. Sterile 16 gauge needle/ Razor for removal of hooks
8. Small lighter (to sterilise needles/knives etc if needed)
9. Scissors
10. Cigarette -not for smoking but to remove leaches!
11. Mopiko/Tiger Balm Cream for Mosquito Bites

Note that medications should not be kept for long in the first aid box and should be removed when not in use. Also keep them in water proof plastic ziplock bags for convenience (You can use the ziplock bags used for sandwiches).A small waterproof tacklebox can be used as a container for the first aid kit.

Fishing First Aid : Removing a Fishing Hook

Ouch!...every real fisherman will get a hook embedded somewhere, but hopefully not a vital part. OK so here is a short guide to removing the hook.

1. Don't panic. Cut the line attached to the hook, sit down in a safe area with a table and good light. Ok now scream for help!

2. Assess the location of the hook. Is it deep or superficial.
*** Do not attempt to remove a fishhook that is deeply embedded, lodged within a joint or tendon, or located in or near an eye or artery.

3. OK there are mainly 3 methods of removing the hook.

A.String-Yank Method.
In this method, take a long piece of fishing line, loop it around the shank. While pressing on the hook eye, yank the linesharply, parallel to the skin and in line with thehook, to snap the hook back out of the wound.
I like this comment made by the author:

"This method is quick, simple and relatively painless, as long as you get it on the first try. The secret to a first time success is yanking the loop of line, which is wrapped around the embedded hook, rather hard so the hook comes out on the first try. The reason you should get it out on the first try is obvious, the patient might not stick around for a second try."

B. Advance & Cut Method
Advance and cut method: single-barbed fishhook. (A) The fishhook is advanced through the skin. (B) The barb is then cut off and (C) the remaining hook is backed out through the entry wound
Advance and cut method: multiple-barbed fishhook. (A) The fishhook is advanced through the skin. (B) The eye of the fishhook is then cut off and (C) the remaining portion of the fishhook is pulled through the exit wound created by advancing the point.

C.Needle Cover Method
(A) Advance an 18-gauge or larger-gauge needle along the fishhook until the needle opening covers the point. (B) The fishhook and needle are then removed at the same time.

4. After patting yourself on the back for the successs of your major brain surgery, wash the wound with an antiseptic like flavin or diluted dettol....this part hurts! Squeeze out the blood and bits of worm bait too. Dress the wound lightly with a small plaster, not tightly. Only apply pressure if the wound is bleeding a lot.

5. You need to get a Tetanus injection within 24 hours of the injury. The tetanus shot lasts 10 years, so you can go ahead and hook yourself again anytime after that.

OK I actually just removed a hook from Mrs. Aru's finger 2 weeks ago. Firstly I realised that you must have a small first aid kit with some alcohol swabs or dettol, Cotton wool, plaster and if possible a sterile needle or clean cutting plyers. I will write another article on a fishing first aid kit soon.

Well the hook was a small one, but the barb had gone in just under the skin. So I tried method A. I yanked...it didn't budge. I yanked hard again...and a third time...ohoh. Luckily Mrs Aru has an amazing tolerance of pain...
After that I had to do method 3, slightly modified as I only had a small sterile needle, but it worked. I washed the wound, put on a plaster and gave her a tetanus jab the next morning.

OK So there you go. I hope this will be useful to you!

Additional Thoughts :

One of the benefits of fishing with a barbless hook is that it's much easier to take out if u hook yourself. Also please be careful when you cast, be aware of who is around you.Lastly try not to tie on your hooks onto the leader with a weight attached. Often the weight drops and pulls the hook into your finger.

When NOT to remove the hook...
1. If it's in the eye or anywhere near it.
2. If it's in a joint, tendon or nerve
3. If it's in an artery eg. your neck or groin. To check,feel the area where the hook is. If it is throbbing or pulsatile, it's an artery.
4. If you are unsure or too chicken.

In which case it's better to go to the nearest clinic or hospital.

Treble hooks are bad news...basically the method is the same but you probably have to cut the trebles and treat them as separate hooks.

One more thought...why don't you practice removing the hook? Get a fish hook and hook it onto a piece of leather, orange or hard plastic. Then try using the methods described in the article. If you can get someone to volunteer even better!

5kg Siakap Caught & Released

On Merdeka Day, we made a short trip to the pond in SP, and this whopper was successfully caught & released.It tipped the scales at 5kg and there are a few big 10-15kg ones in there. Most of them are about 700gm-1kg in size though. Make sure you sign up for the family competition!

OK It's right around the corner on Saturday afternoon 24th September 2005. The aim is to have a fun family outing and a fantastic angling adventure. If you've been following the PMPP website, you'll know that we have discovered a fantastic place to fish for Siakap in Sungai Petani. We have arranged with the gracious owner to have our family competition day there.
The last time I went there, I had over 50 hook ups but only landed about 30 Siakaps. Wow it was one of the best fishing experiences I've ever had. It will be strictly Catch & Release to promote the sport of fishing and to educate our next generation of anglers. Bring your family as it's almost 100% that they will get enough fishing action to last them a year!
An Artificial Barbless lure will be provided for you, it's the one we found most effective in for the Siakap here. If you lose it, additional ones can be bought on site.Please bring light tackle, preferably 6-12lb line on an ultralight rig to maximise the fun.
In addition, a scorecard system will be used in which the number of fish caught and released will be recorded and signed by the nearest person fishing. This is to reduce the stress on the fishes as weighing them will most likely kill them.
So sign up quickly, there are only 50 places and this special pond is not open to public, but it is open for the PMPP Family Fishing Competition!

Catch & Release : The Future

I bet you can still remember the biggest fish that got away...but can you remember the last fish you caught and ate? As true fishermen, the thrill is not the trophy, but the hunt and epic fight. In order to safeguard this sport for the future generations, it is important to instill the principle of "Catch & Release" as opposed to just being "Meat Hunter". Here are some guidelines from the Catch & Release Foundation.

These guidelines are generic but remembering them will give all species of fish a greater chance of survival. A fish is too valuable to be caught and enjoyed only once, be responsible.

Use barbless hooks or circle hooks (especially when bait fishing), or pinch the barb flat with pliers. If you use a net, use one made of cotton mesh or rubber. It is less harmful to fish scales, gills and eyes. Only net your fish if it is the only way to control it.

Wet your hands when handling fish. Dry hands and gloves will remove its protective mucous (slime) coating and scales. These protective layers help prevent infection by waterborne disease. Do not beach a fish or let it flop around the deck of the boat.

Try not to remove the fish from the water. If you must, be quick and gentle, do not squeeze the fish. Do not hold the fish near the gills or eyes (Pike, Muskie, Snook, etc.) Needle nose pliers, hemostats, de-hookers etc., will speed up the removal of a deep set hook.

To revive the fish, hold it under the belly and by the tail, keep it in an upright position underwater, do not move the fish back and forth** (this is also a good time to get a measurement and take a photo). If you are fishing in a river or stream, hold the fish facing the current. Be patient and give the fish as much time as it needs to recover and swim away on its own.

Siakap Competition Coming Up in October

PMPP will be organising a special catch and release competition in early October in this special place in Sungai Petani which is stocked with Siakap/Barramundi. Definitely not to be missed! It's for members only so sign up if you haven't already!

Fishing in SP again

Ah we had another trip to the Siakap Pond in SP last weekend and once again the siakap were waiting. PMPP will be organising a fishing competition for it's members here which will be strictly catch and release. It will be on in October and definitely will be worth the visit!

Fishing for Milkfish at Pulau Betong

Over the weekend some of the PMPP committee went up to Pulau Betong (Air Itam).It's at the prawn farm and the owner graciously let us fish there. There are a lot of milkfish and occasional Tarpons in the brackish water. The milkfish like bread and also take small lures and even floating poppers.

I have just noted a very good online tide chart from the Marine Meteorological Forecast website. It has weather and tide charts for the whole of Malaysia and is quite accurate and concise. Definitely a useful tool for the online Fishing Kaki!

Effective Lure for Siakap

We just had an outing to a fishing pond with lots of Siakap in it with sizes ranging from 600gm to a kilo. Very good fight on ultralight line. This lure in particular was super effective resulting in 50 hook ups and 30 landed and released. It's basically a weighted jig head with a soft plastic octopus on a barbless hook. Cast it and allow it to sink to the bottom, then retrieve it at a medium speed...wham!

Since most of us are online nowadays, you can check the tides anywhere in Malaysia or around the world through your handphone, notebook or computer. Largest Mekong River Catfish

Recently the largest freshwater fish was caught in Thailang. A whopping 293kg was caught in a fishing net...would have given a good fight though!

Berkley has a nicely categorised fishing tips site that is worth a visit. Incidentally the picture is an advert from Shimano...but the tip could be...watch out for great white sharks while trolling for fish!
